Self-Paced Training Opportunities!

Immigrant Connections and English Learner Portal proudly present:

We need strong partnerships as we move forward, particularly with our immigrant and EL families, and we need the skills and resources to do so. This training is for teachers, counselors, parent liaisons, and anyone else looking for strategies to support their work in this area.

In this training, you'll:
  • explore tools and resources for EL and immigrant families to support their children’s learning at home
  • examine the benefits of partnering with refugee and immigrant organizations in the community during this time;
  • review federal requirements for providing parents with information in a language they understand and how those can be met during the pandemic; and
  • share solutions for connecting with EL and immigrant families who have been hard to reach.
(If this training sounds familiar, you're right!  I taught this course live in July and August.  The content remains the same; the only difference is that it's self-paced and includes additional readings, resources, and online discussion, which bumps it up to 5 hours.)

Resources for Caring for Muslim Students When Teaching 9/11

by AYL

As we embark upon the 20th anniversary of 9/11, we are reminded by Teaching While Muslim that Muslim students and their families are still suffering the consequences of the “War on Terror” and are witnessing the oppressive tactics and policies against Muslim nations from the very country they live in. On top of all of this, Muslim students are still living in a global pandemic, those living in New Orleans and the northeast are still recovering from the devastation of hurricane Ida, facing legal discrimination against women in Texas, watching the heartache in Afghanistan persists, protesting for a free Palestine, and so much more. I center all of this as a reminder that Muslim students across our country and the globe are holding a lot this year, which means that anti-racist educators actively care for and center the experiences of Muslim students and their families by doing the work!

Below are some great resources to help guide you:

Muslim Studies Curriculum: a collaborative project between CAIR-NJ and Teaching While Muslim: a K-12 resource that provides rationales, essential questions, enduring understandings, misconceptions, classroom resources, background resources, books, and so much more!

Learning for Justice Resources: a quick search query with several articles, lesson plans, and approaches for combating Islamophobia when teaching 9/11.

Critical Connections: an approach to teaching 9/11 while caring for Muslim students and their families.

Engaging Families in Re-Entry Planning

Wednesday, April 21, 3:00-4:00 pm ET

Students and teachers have started to return to in-person instruction after an unprecedented year of virtual and hybrid schooling. As schools reopen, educators will need to consider a variety of needs. Those include academic as well as socio-emotional needs. How can schools and districts collaborate with families in the re-entry process? And how can we ease anxieties and smooth the transition?

In this webinar, we'll hear from a panel of school and district representatives from Stafford County Public Schools in Virginia and Queen Anne's County Public Schools in Maryland. The panel will discuss how they’ve engaged families in planning for the return to in-person instruction. They’ll share what's worked and what hasn't, lessons learned, and tips for those working through similar challenges.

Presenters:

  • Alexis White, Principal, Garrisonville Elementary School
  • JR Raybold, Principal, Conway Elementary School
  • Scott Elchenko, Principal Stafford Middle School
  • Kristen McKinney-Nash, Family Engagement Specialist, Stafford County Public Schools
  • Amanda Ensor, Title I Family Engagement Specialist, Queen Anne's County Public Schools

In this virtual event, we’ll discuss best practices and considerations for accelerating all readers, through the lens of the research-based Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) K–12 curriculum. To register or learn more, please click here.

NJ Spotlight News Virtual Roundtable:

Adverse Childhood Experiences: Inside New Jersey's New Plan to Address a Perennial Harm

Thursday, March 11, 2020 from 4:00 PM - 5:15 PM

Online via teleconferencing

This will be an online event only. Please register to have a teleconferencing link emailed to you Thursday, 3/11, at 3pm with a repeat send at 4pm.

Last month New Jersey unveiled a unique action plan to help families and communities protect against and heal from the effects of adverse childhood experiences that can cause harm to individuals and families for generations. After a year of living under intense pandemic pressures, the need has likely never been so great.

Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, impact four of ten youngsters in New Jersey across racial and economic lines according to a 2019 report. These traumas – such as abuse, poverty, and parental incarceration – can lead to chronic health issues like alcoholism and cancer, struggles in school and with law enforcement, and even premature death.

COVID-19 has exacerbated the scale and breadth of childhood traumas. The sickness, death, isolation, and economic decline associated with the coronavirus outbreak have harmed scores of families in New Jersey and across the nation. Disruptions to normal school routines have worsened the effect of ACEs and experts agree increased harm to children and youth is already perceptible.

Please join NJ Spotlight News on Thursday, March 11, at 4pm for a virtual roundtable with a panel of policy leaders, clinical experts, and front-line advocates to examine how COVID-19 is amplifying childhood trauma, New Jersey’s innovative, grass-roots approach to addressing ACEs, and how we can all play a role in the state’s action plan.

Panelists:

Arturo Brito, MD, MPH, Executive Director, The Nicholson Foundation

Dave Ellis, Executive Director, Office of Resilience, New Jersey Department of Children and Families

Ashanti D. Jones, MSW, Community Engagement Manager, New Jersey Institute for Social Justice

Additional panelist to be announced.
