TITLE: Teachers as Scholars- Mindful Teaching: Introduction to Contemplative Pedagogy
DATE: February 23 & April 10, 2015
TIME: 8:30 AM-3:00 PM
LOCATION: Montclair State University, University Hall- ADP Center, Room 1145
INSTRUCTOR: David Lee Keiser, PhD

Classroom teachers are used to being on the front lines with our nation’s schoolchildren. The stresses and pressures of classroom teaching have only deepened with increased, high-stakes testing regimen and concomitant evaluation systems. This two-part seminar will introduce teachers and school staff to the emerging field of contemplative pedagogy, or mindful teaching. The first part of the seminar will be an experiential introduction to mindfulness in teaching and to the burgeoning contemplative education community in the US and elsewhere. Teachers will reflect upon, engage with, and experience the felt sense of caring and compassion in the classroom. Secular exercises, structured discussion, and a sampling of short contemplative practices will focus the first part.

The second part will build upon the foundation, and, after a week apart, will use participants’ experiences with practice—both in and out of school—to deepen our learning and set intentions for future practice. Both sessions will draw upon the work of thriving contemplative educational programs such as CARE for Teachers, Mindful Schools, and the Mindfulness in Education Network.

David Lee Keiser, PhD, is Associate Professor of Teacher Education in the Secondary and Special Education Department of MSU. He is a former Professional Development Schools Liaison to Montclair High School, and has been incorporating contemplative teaching at MSU for nearly a decade. He has recently published in this area, including a book chapter, “Fitting in Breath Hunting,” he wrote with a Thai monk in the forest tradition. He is a trained facilitator with the CARE for Teachers Program, an advisor to Mindful Schools, and a founding faculty member of the Contemplative Pedagogy and Practice Fellows program at MSU.
