TITLE: Teachers as Scholars: Creating Welcoming Schools for LGBTQQ Youth
DATE: November 14 & 17, 2014
LOCATION: Montclair State University-University Hall, ADP Center Room 1143 (Nov. 14) & Room 1145 (Nov. 17)
TIME: 8:30 AM-3:30 PM
INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Darla Linville

Day 1: Introduction to LGBTQQ Youth in Schools: This session will provide an introduction to the concepts of sexuality, gender, gender identity, gender expression and the identities that young people claim in those categories. We will cover the vocabulary used to identify lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth and other relevant terminology. The session will also cover data on schools and LGBTQQ youth outcomes in educational settings. We will discuss teacher, parent, administrator and community concerns, and participants will be provided statistics to advocate for LGBTQQ youth with various audiences.

Day 2: Advocating for LGBTQQ Inclusion in Schools: This session will presume familiarity with the concepts presented in session one. Those already familiar with the concepts and vocabulary of sexuality, gender, gender identity, and gender expression, as well as some research on LGBTQQ youth in schools could attend this session without attending Day 1. This session will provide a forum for teachers using materials with LGBTQQ content in their classrooms to share their experiences and ideas, and for those who would like to begin using these materials to generate plans. Lesson plans, content, and units will be provided, and the advocacy needed to begin using these materials in classrooms will be discussed. Other topics will include supporting a gay-straight-trans alliance (GSTA) in the school, microaggressions, and assessing the acceptance level for LGBTQ youth in your school.
