Many teachers genuinely strive to be advocates for their disabled students. Despite their best intentions, at times their discourses and practices may contradict the agendas of disabled activists. In this workshop we will explore how educators and family members alike can learn from the disability community, work to disrupt ableism in schools, and position themselves as allies. We will examine practices that are rooted in ableism and lead to the creation of social hierarchies in schools. We will explore ways to nurture positive identity and pride among disabled students.
