Title of Course: Questions in Art – An Inquiry Approach to Art Education

Date and Time: March 5, 2013, 4:00pm to 6:00pm

Location: Montclair Art Museum, 3 S. Mountain Ave. Montclair, NJ 07042

Name of Instructor: Joe Oyler

Description: The Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC) and the Montclair Art Museum (MAM) have partnered together to create the “Questions in Art” series. This sequence of gallery discussions for children centers around some of the central questions in Philosophy of Art including; What is Art? Can there be art with no viewer? What is the relationship of art and the context of its creation (e.g. historical, cultural, personal, political)? If the reception and the intention of a work don’t match is someone wrong about the art? As an extension of the insights gained through this newly established program, the IAPC and MAM are collaborating with the MSUNER to host a professional development workshop for Art Educators introducing them to the approaches used in the program and the pedagogical principles that inform it. Time will also be spent learning about the various ways the museum can support the work of Art Educators.
