TITLE: Language and Art: An Uncommon Approach to Teaching Language Arts (or Anything Else)
DATE: March 7th & 21st, 2016
TIME: 4:00 PM-7:00 PM
LOCATION: Bloomfield High School- 160 Broad Street, Bloomfield, NJ 07003- Room A308
INSTRUCTOR: Lisa Basile
This course aims to nudge teachers to weave visual expression/art into the teaching of reading and writing in their classrooms. It will explore ways that we can take common core concepts out of the box of traditional assignments, so that students are engaged and learning to deconstruct story or information and their own writing and process. We will spend time looking at several successful projects- how they were planned, what materials were needed, how kids responded, why they were successful, and how they have since been modified from their original. Participants will also engage in making art, using simple materials such as brown paper bags, cardboard, letter stamps, letter stencils, black and red paint, thread, string, staples etc. We will spend some time brainstorming ways that teachers present can use some of these ideas in their own classrooms depending on their subject and their student population. While the instructor is a high school ESL teacher, the ideas and concepts are applicable across the board from K-12 , with both non-traditional and traditional learners, and across content areas.
