Title: Introduction to Social Stories

Teachers will be introduced to the various benefits of incorporating social stories with curriculum, social skills, and other academic and functional proficiency goals. This will be an introductory lesson on using social stories, which were originally devised for individuals on the autism spectrum to better understand social nuances. Social stories, when personalized and used in the correct setting, can expand students understanding of skills, and strengthen their literacy knowledge, such as reading left to right, pointing to pictures and words, and reading sentences. The introduction will include picture and video examples of how to use them in the classroom, as well as raw data on the progress of various goals for individual students in a special needs class at New Jersey Regional Day School in Newark. They will be taught how to think of creating a social story, and how to incorporate it into their curriculum and plans to suit their students. Teachers will be shown a step-by-step example of how a social story is created using Google Drive.
Materials: SMARTboard (classroom), Chromebooks (provided by school), Activity print-out pens/writing utensils
Activity: Teachers will be split into pairs after the social story presentation and fill out activity sheet and create their own Social Story using Google Slides. They will be given 30-45 minutes to complete, and then partners will present the story to colleagues in the classroom.
There will be time for questions and reflections after presentation.
