The American Civil War & the Gilded AgeTravel back in time to the Civil War period through artworks produced in the aftermath of the war. Learn about the home front in the north through a family scene, see the effect of the war on an about-to-be- freed slave woman, and experience the beginning of reconstruction through a sculpture designed to act as a “conversation piece” in a northern parlor. The discussion continues in the “gilded age” through a survey of art produced for wealthy collectors and a visit to the Museum’s 1885 Ballantine house, a gilded age townhouse. This mini-course will meet in the Museum’s Picturing America galleries, and includes strategies for using works of art as vehicles for teaching Social Studies with a focus on American culture and history. Pedagogy includes guided looking and discussion, decoding the artworks, and incorporating art in the social studies classroom through object-based education.
