American Landscapes & Cityscapes: 19th & 20th centuriesTake a trip through the American landscape & cityscape through observation and discussion. Learn the components of a landscape; explore the use of symbolism and color to tell the story of manifest destiny, and compare how a landscape was depicted by a western artist and a Native American artist. City scenes complete the journey showing the transformation of the land through “urban development” from nature to modern America.This mini-course will meet in the Museum’s Picturing America galleries, and includes strategies for using works of art as vehicles for teaching Social Studies with a focus on American culture and history. Pedagogy includes guided looking and discussion, decoding the artworks, and incorporating art in the social studies classroom through object-based education.
