NNER First Thursday Series

Dr. Namulundah Florence (Brooklyn College - CUNY)

Join us on Thursday as Dr. Florence shares her most recent work that centers on helping teachers explore the origins of differing value structures in safe forums. It uses guided cross-cultural exchanges to help break down prejudices and foster an appreciation of other cultures and the essence of a common humanity. Acknowledging the inextricable link between cultural and structural factors in the plight of vulnerable student populations, this work focuses on how to help counter prevailing disparities in perceptions and expectations within school settings. Designed primarily for teacher candidates, this book offers educators a forum for recognizing the impact of primary backgrounds in teaching and learning.

Adapting to Cultural Pluralism in Urban Classrooms, by Dr. Namulunduh Florence, focuses on four elements in the teaching/learning process: school climate, the views and expectations of teachers in solidarity with principals and policy makers; teacher interactions with students and parents; and the centrality of the reflection to improving practice. It offers tools to support cultural adaptations that enhance the academic success of inner-city students served by predominantly white and more privileged teachers.

At a time of planetarian stasis, it may seem odd to talk about transnationalism; and, yet, more than ever, we have become aware of the interconnections existing around the world. What insights can a transnational model offer us to critically rethink cultural and socio-economic relationships while keeping in mind older forms of border crossing (colonialism, imperialism, historical diasporas) and also the contemporary circulation of people, goods and ideas (mass migrations, global markets, social media networks)?

Join us on Sun. Oct. 4 (3pm EST) for Transnational Italian Studies within Transnational Modern Languages: A Book and Handbook Presentation in conversation with the authors (Charles Burdett, Loredana Polezzi, Derek Duncan and Jennifer Burns), moderated by Teresa Fiore with the contributions of Giulia Riccò and Serena Bassi.

This online event is of relevance to students, faculty, and scholars in, among others, Modern/World Languages, Global/International Studies, Education, Social Sciences, Arts and the Humanities, Communication and Environmental Studies, Business, as well as members of the community at large with an interest in multiple forms of belonging and exchange across languages, cultures and nations.

Title: Teachers as Deputies: Confronting ableism, racism & linguicism in schools.
Opening Act: TBD

Moderators: Drs. Tanya Maloney and Bree Picower of Montclair State University

Host: MSU’s College of Education and Human Services Dean’s Office

Subini Annamma is an Associate Professor at Stanford University who examines the interdependent nature of racism and ableism and how intersectional injustice impacts education in urban schools and youth prisons.

María Cioè-Peña is a bilingual/biliterate researcher and educator who examines the intersections of disability, language, school-parent partnerships and education policy, focusing specifically on Latinx bilingual children with dis/abilities, their families and their ability to access multilingual and inclusive learning spaces within public schools.

Engaging Families in Re-Entry Planning

Wednesday, April 21, 3:00-4:00 pm ET

Students and teachers have started to return to in-person instruction after an unprecedented year of virtual and hybrid schooling. As schools reopen, educators will need to consider a variety of needs. Those include academic as well as socio-emotional needs. How can schools and districts collaborate with families in the re-entry process? And how can we ease anxieties and smooth the transition?

In this webinar, we'll hear from a panel of school and district representatives from Stafford County Public Schools in Virginia and Queen Anne's County Public Schools in Maryland. The panel will discuss how they’ve engaged families in planning for the return to in-person instruction. They’ll share what's worked and what hasn't, lessons learned, and tips for those working through similar challenges.

Presenters:

  • Alexis White, Principal, Garrisonville Elementary School
  • JR Raybold, Principal, Conway Elementary School
  • Scott Elchenko, Principal Stafford Middle School
  • Kristen McKinney-Nash, Family Engagement Specialist, Stafford County Public Schools
  • Amanda Ensor, Title I Family Engagement Specialist, Queen Anne's County Public Schools

Hey, it’s Zaretta Hammond here…

I hope you’ve been holding up okay in the midst of it all.

Since you are on the official wait list, I wanted to let you know we are opening registration soon for the Culturally Responsive Education by Design PLC -- on November 30th.

Our aim is to help you implement elements of the Ready for Rigor frame beyond the basics that the Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain book gives you. That's because we know that reversing “inequity by design” requires a focused effort, not just a bundle of new strategies.

While the PLC was designed before the pandemic and remote learning was the order of the day, the principles and practices are adaptable to a distance learning setting.

This time around, the cohort will run from January to June, 2021.

If you’re still interested in joining the PLC, then here’s what to do:

1. Sign up for one of the FREE informational webinars on November 30th. In this webinar, you'll learn more about how the PLC works and what level of support is right for you.

2. After attending the webinar, you will have the opportunity to enroll in the PLC.

Since you are on the waitlist, you have first dibs on signing up!

Review the two time options below and click the link to register for the free informational webinar!

Additional tips:
1. Be sure to register AND sign on early -- unfortunately we can't help troubleshoot Zoom issues on the day of the webinar.

2. Use a personal email address -- School systems sometimes block confirmation emails from Zoom

3. Space is Limited -- our Zoom Webinar can hold 1,000 people if all works well (and we all know that sometimes Zoom has tech difficulties) So be sure that you login early!

Looking forward to sharing more details about the PLC with you!
