Framed by what she has conceptualized as Vision-Driven Justice, Dr. J will share key principles of this orientation in conversation with youth who have been working on their visions for social change.

Speakers: Jamila Lyiscott and Young People from Newark
Host: MSU’s College of Education and Human Services Dean’s Office
Co-Sponsors: Department of Teaching and Learning, Center of Pedagogy, MSU Network for Educational Renewal, MSU’s ADP Center

Jamila Lyiscott aka, Dr. J, is a community-engaged scholar, nationally renowned speaker, and the author of Black Appetite. White Food: Issues of Race, Voice, and Justice Within and Beyond the Classroom. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Social Justice Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she is the co-founder and co-director of the Center of Racial Justice and Youth Engaged Research. Dr. J is most well known for being featured on TED.com where her video, '3 Ways to Speak English,' has been viewed over 4.5 million times, and for her commissioned TED Talk, '2053' in response to the inauguration of the 45th occupant of the white house. She has been invited to over 100 institutions throughout the nation where she works closely with youth, educators, and communities to disrupt racial inequities and enact a vision-driven justice.

Dr. Lyiscott will be joined by preK-12th grade students from Newark public schools who have been engaging with her work in their classrooms.  All of the students who will be participating have student teachers and mentors from The Newark Teacher Project (NTP) at Montclair State University.  NTP is a small innovative teacher education program that prepares antiracist, social justice oriented teachers for the Newark Board of Education.

NNER First Thursday Series

Dr. Namulundah Florence (Brooklyn College - CUNY)

Join us on Thursday as Dr. Florence shares her most recent work that centers on helping teachers explore the origins of differing value structures in safe forums. It uses guided cross-cultural exchanges to help break down prejudices and foster an appreciation of other cultures and the essence of a common humanity. Acknowledging the inextricable link between cultural and structural factors in the plight of vulnerable student populations, this work focuses on how to help counter prevailing disparities in perceptions and expectations within school settings. Designed primarily for teacher candidates, this book offers educators a forum for recognizing the impact of primary backgrounds in teaching and learning.

Adapting to Cultural Pluralism in Urban Classrooms, by Dr. Namulunduh Florence, focuses on four elements in the teaching/learning process: school climate, the views and expectations of teachers in solidarity with principals and policy makers; teacher interactions with students and parents; and the centrality of the reflection to improving practice. It offers tools to support cultural adaptations that enhance the academic success of inner-city students served by predominantly white and more privileged teachers.

At a time of planetarian stasis, it may seem odd to talk about transnationalism; and, yet, more than ever, we have become aware of the interconnections existing around the world. What insights can a transnational model offer us to critically rethink cultural and socio-economic relationships while keeping in mind older forms of border crossing (colonialism, imperialism, historical diasporas) and also the contemporary circulation of people, goods and ideas (mass migrations, global markets, social media networks)?

Join us on Sun. Oct. 4 (3pm EST) for Transnational Italian Studies within Transnational Modern Languages: A Book and Handbook Presentation in conversation with the authors (Charles Burdett, Loredana Polezzi, Derek Duncan and Jennifer Burns), moderated by Teresa Fiore with the contributions of Giulia Riccò and Serena Bassi.

This online event is of relevance to students, faculty, and scholars in, among others, Modern/World Languages, Global/International Studies, Education, Social Sciences, Arts and the Humanities, Communication and Environmental Studies, Business, as well as members of the community at large with an interest in multiple forms of belonging and exchange across languages, cultures and nations.
