Professional Development Series on Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying in Educational Settings

HIB/Anti-Bullying Initiatives: Progress, Evaluation, and Strategies in K-12 Schools

A conference for Teachers, School Counselors, Social Workers, SACs, School Psychologists, Administrators, and School Safety/Bullying Teams

 

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2011

8:30 am to 3:00 pm

University Hall, 7th floor Conference Center, MSU

New Jersey school districts are implementing anti-bullying policies and procedures, and engaging in required professional development programs that fulfill the new State mandate regarding Anti-Bullying Programs in public schools.  School districts are also in the process of implementing and evaluating procedures to ensure safety for students, comply with the new law, and deal with both bullies and victims in the most effective way, for the safety and best educational practice for our students.  This school-based educational program will address bullying in educational settings, and will feature presentations from Montclair State University faculty members, school administrators and government officials.

The conference includes continental breakfast and lunch, and documentation of 6 Professional Development Hours approved by State of NJ DOE and/or 6 LPC Continuing Ed hours approved by NBCC.

Featured presentations will include:

Ret. Lt. Gary Moleta, Training and Development Coordinator for the New Jersey Association of School Resource Officers, speaking from the law enforcement perspective on district and school report writing, specifics of investigations, judicial counseling concerns, evidence handling, and district policies and procedures.

 

Dr. Gerald J. Vernotica, Former Assistant Commissioner, Division of Field Services, NJDOE; Executive County Superintendent; Superintendent of Mendham Township; Washington Township (Morris County); Roseland and Interim Regional Superintendent for the Newark Public Schools; will moderate a panel of current superintendents and administrators for a glimpse of what is happening currently, what accomplishments they can share, as well as challenges.

 

Dr. Joseph Oluwole – Attorney and Professor, and Gina Grasso, Teacher, Caldwell/West Caldwell School District, MSU Educational Leadership Program, on further interpretation of the HIB Bullying Law and its implications for NJ public schools.

 

Other session topics include:

•    Marginalized students: Special Education concerns

•    Cyberbullying Issues

•    Working with bullies and their families

•    Self-esteem and empowerment for targets/victims

•    The “It Gets Better” initiative and how to implement in schools

•    The bullying team – Advocating for the advocates/Support and procedures

    * Individuals from Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal (MSUNER) School Districts - $90

    * Individuals from non-MSUNER schools or districts - $125

    * Montclair State University Students (with copy of student ID) - $60
